Breeding season: mainly September to December (but can breed in any month if water is available). Clutch size up to six, usually three or four. Nest is a loose platform in a living tree such as a River Red Gum near or over water. Nests may be solitary or in loose colonies. They have regular movements in winter and spring in many areas.

Breeding season mainly October to December. May breed outside this season in response to rainfall. Both sexes share incubation of eggs and care of young. Builds nest in tall trees. Female lays 3 to 5 pale blue eggs. Incubation period 21-24 days. Young fly 40-45 days. Normally nomadic.
