The reserve was aquired by the Council and Landcare Group in 2002 to conserve the irongrass grassland. Central area has been quarried for stone. Registered in 2011 as a native vegetation heritage area under the Native Vegetation Act
Critically endangered Iron-grass Natural Temperate Grasslands of South Australia. State significant species Austrostipa pilata and Bothriochloa macra.
Swainsona lessertiifolia is rarely seen away from the coast. Several dozen plants can be seen with bright purple flowers in mid-spring - on the rise to the east of the southern gate
Occasional restoration activities mainly weed control and fence maintenance.
