Medicago truncatula


Small clover-like plant to 60 cm tall, low-growing. Dark green trifoliate leaves made up of three rounded leaflets often with a dark spot in the centre. Pea flowers are yellow in small clusters of one to five. Fruit is a small spiny pod or burr.

Distinctive barrel-shaped seed pods (burr) made up of 2-6 tight coils of flattened stout spines.

Biology

Annual. Native to the Mediterranean region and western Asia. Occasional in lowland grasslands and woodlands, and also in disturbed plavces and roadsides.
