Low slender multi-stemmed shrub to 2 m tall with grooved hairless branches. Rounded rigid pungent leaves, spreading or slightly pointing upwards. Yellow pea flowers have a crimson centre.

In NSW this species was used by Aboriginal people as an inhalant to relieve breathing difficulties. The branches and leaves were placed on a low fire and the vapour inhaled.

Easily misidentified without a good look as gorse Ulex europeas.
