Tufted perennial grass to 80 cm, erect and cane-like. Sparse tightly inrolled leaves to 10 cm and 1.5 wide (when flattened out).

Characteristic three-branched bristle or awn on seeds. Purplish loose seedheads with a single flower in each spikelet.

Biology

Perennial. Skeletal soils on dry rocky sites. Relatively unpalatable to stock. C4 grass (biochemical system that is part of photosynthesis) which favours the species in hotter environments.
