Calotis pubescens


Perennial herb with thick, fleshy rhizomes, to 10 cm high. Forms large mats. Leaves very woolly when young, 15-50 mm long, 6-12 mm wide. Unbranched, leaved, flowering stems hold single mauve or white flower-heads, with about 40 petals and yellow centres. Seeds form spiny burrs.

Grows in subalpine treeless plains in herb-rich grassland (often dominated by Poa hookeri) not subject to periodic inundation.
