Dichelachne crinita


Sparse open tufted grass with plume-like flowering stems to 1.5 m tall. Flat bluish green leaves to 20 cm long, 2-5 mm wide. Seedheads 6-25 cm long and distinctly fluffy with long hairs.

Distinctive Features

Long thin fine sickle-shaped bristles on seeds (awns) up to 55 mm in length, attached just below the top of the seed.

Biology

Perennial. A common plant of native grasslands and open eucalypt woodlands, usually in well-watered sites. Seeds readily. Occurs on a wide variety of substrates. Not usually grazed.

From the Greek dichelos = spilt, achne = chaff, referring to the characteristic split in the bract enclosing the flower (lemma). Seeds may irritate the skin.
