Hairless attractive herb growing from a rosette on leaves to 40 cm. Lance-shaped leaves to 12 cm long with toothed or lobed leaf margins, and distinctive leaf-like bracts or stem leaves at the point where the flowerheads branch.
Showy yellow flower with five equal-sized lobes, the bottom petal split into two, brownish near the throat.
