This species bears male and female flowers separately on the one plant (monoecious)

Biology

Annual. Shallow, seasonally-inundated depressions and swamp margins on clay plains. Little is known about its ecology and biology. Possibly requires a period of inundation to enable germination from soil-stored seed. Does not appear every year at the same site. Grazing and trampling by sheep may be a factor in its decline.
