Epthianura tricolor


Small bird, up to 13 cm. Short decurved bill. Females much paler than males. Brown above, with white throat and pinkish below.

Breeding season: July to December. Clutch size is two to four. They walk rather than hop. Mostly seen on the ground.

Distinctive Markings

Males dark brown above, with brilliant red crown, breast and rump. Black mask around the eye. White throat.

Diet

Omnivore. Mostly feeds on insects, but can feed on nectar from flowers of trees or shrubs.

Found in arid and semi-arid zones, in open grasslands, shrublands, dunes and plains.
