Erect herb 30-60 cm tall, branching at base or below flower clusters. Fleshy roots. Crowded leaves oval to lance-shaped but fatter at the ends, purplish underneath and hairy. Lower leaves up to 4-16 cm long, mid-stem narrower and lance-shaped, toothed or lobed. Yellow or yellow-green tubular flowerheads are small and narrow, held in sparse clusters at the end of stalks. Seedheads very fluffy, dispersed by wind.

Biology

Annual, biennial or short-lived perennial. Moist soils. Seeds dispersed by wind. Grows in disturbed sites and in open woodland, often growing with S. quadridentatus.

Interesting Facts
Similar Species

Very variable species. Similar to and co-occurs with the more common Senecio quadridentatus but has fewer flowerheads and different seeds with flat ribs.
