Bromus diandrus

Tufted introduced grass to 90 cm tall. Finely-pointed rough flat leaves to 25 cm long and 4-8 mm wide. Flowerheads up to 25 cm long and nodding.

Distinctive Features

Rough dull leaves often have visible purple stripes along the leaf veins. Flowerheads are very rough to touch with clusters of flower spikes very long, up to 10 cm.
Biology

Annual. Grows vigorously during spring, quickly goes to seed and dies off in early summer. Invades distrubed native vegetation and croplands very quickly and can become a dense infestation. Each plant can produce more than 3000 seeds.

Accidentally introduced into Australia around 1875 via seeds attached to livestock, in seed bags, or in ship ballast. Native of Mediterraneum and southwest Europe.
