Spreading herb with stout running stems growing to 10 cm tall and up to 1 m wide. Leaves fern-like. Single round flowerheads of small green flowers held on a slender stem above the foliage.

Marble-sized globular seedheads (burrs) with fine yellowish or reddish spines which readily attach to clothing or animal fur. Prostrate spreading form is distinctive.

Biology

Perennial. Can spread by growing roots at leaf nodes. Grows in damp soils but can survive dry conditions. Grows on disturbed ground. Soil-binding ground cover.
