Carex tasmanica


Densely tufted sedge to 20 cm tall with rounded stems. Sheaths pale brown with red-dotted papery margins. Flowers in short dense brown spikes.

Leaves have distinct withered curly tips.

Biology

Perennial. Heavy clay soils along drainage lines and roadside drains. Tolerates soil disturbance, and even copes with some herbicide application. Drought-toleratant and copes with some waterlogging.

Only occurs in a few locations in western Victoria from the Melbourne area westwards so is considered vulnerable in Victoria but is common in Tasmania. Mr Curly Sedge is the emblem of the Australian Network for Plant Conservation.
